How to become a Registered Dietitian

Peace be to you all! In this video, I interview Ms.Shantelle Bethea, RD. She is a Registered Dietitian at the hospital where I work. RDs are HIGHLY valued health team members because of their advanced knowledge of how nutrition affects the body. As a Hospitalist Physician Assistant, I take care of many patients who suffer from chronic diseases or massive trauma. Getting adequate nutrition is an important part of their healing process. Many of the patients are unable to eat, so require parental nutrition (through an IV) , PEG ( or, nasogastric tube (NGT). Registered Dietitians like Ms.Betha, provide the formulations and suggestions so I can write orders in the patients ‘ charts. RD’s require Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees and have to take national board exams. The pay ranges from between $45,000 to $65,000 on average. However, those with private practices can make CONSIDERABLY more. Please go to the website of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for more information about this field.
