John Heart’s personal favorite exercises for himself and most men over 50.
While most men tend to switch to machine-type exercises as they age, John and his clients depend on free weight exercises primarily due to the fact that they involve larger more muscle groups to work together as intended.
Free weight exercises also involve lots of accessory muscles like the rotator cuff and hip stabilizers in ways that machines cannot. Machines are usually fixed in the plane that they operate in, therefore the need for the supporting muscles mentioned is nullified.
Squats
Front Squats
Deadlifts
Dumbbell Bench Presses
Incline Bench Presses
All are used properly once or twice every 2 weeks within routines with a frequency of no more than 2-3x per week
