“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” ~ Hippocrates, Father of Medicine ☤
Ever wonder what the difference between a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a Nutritionist is? Well, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist wether they have a degree in nutritional sciences or not. It’s not necessarily a good or bad thing but it doesn’t prove that the person has had the appropriate and standard training. Nutritionists usually get involved with research and nutritional studies. One of my biggest heroes is Dr. T. Colin Campbell, who happens to be a nutritionist. He holds a Ph.D. in nutrition and has published in very prestiges peer-reviewed journals, as well as being involved in nutrition policy.
The Registered Dietitian (RD) position is the ONLY credential in the field of nutrition to give nutritional advice. Not only does becoming a RD look better on paper, being an RD can qualify you pretty much for any job that a nutritionist would do. So if I was to recommend a title for people to after if they are interested in nutrition, it would be pursuing an RD.
Full details of the program can be found on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website: Basically what it comes down to is this; finishing a 4-year bachelor’s program in dietetics, completing an internship (clinical, community, & food service), and taking the national exam to become a Registered Dietitian.
Hopefully that helped clear things up about the differences between registered dietitians and nutritionists. For those who are very passionate about fixing this healthcare crisis, becoming an RD is for you. BUT if you just want a side-project or you’re not really into the whole standardization of a University, that’s okay. You can still spread this good message writing books, making YouTube videos, becoming a fitness coach, playing music, etc. This position is for those who do not want the people who tell others that “CARBS MAKE YOU FAT!” to get away with it 😉
