In today’s news we look at the link between regular exercise and the slowing down of the aging process.

According to new studies, remaining physically active as we grow older could help to keep our muscles and immune systems fit and healthy.

Exercise among middle-aged and older adults in the Western world is rare.

It is estimated that 10% of people past the age of 65 work out regularly.

Our expectations about what is considered “normal” aging is based
primarily on how growing older affects sedentary people.

Some British scientists suspected that exercise might have an impact on the direction of physical aging thus altering beliefs about what “normal” aging means.

The study involved dozens of male and female recreational cyclists,

between the ages of 55 and 79, who had been cycling for decades,

and still pedaled about 400 miles per month.

While most people’s muscle health and immune response worsen after middle age, with the effects accelerating decade by decade,
the cyclists proved to have reflexes, memories, balance and metabolic profiles that more closely resembled those of 30-year-olds.

A regular exercise program is one of the best ways to keep you physically and mentally young and healthy.
