At ASD Fitness Center, Those With Autism Can Be Healthy and Happy!

If you are walking outside of the ASD Fitness Center, you’ll notice a wall covered with names and handprints. What appears to be a decorative art project is actually a celebration of one year of hard work and achievement for each individual imprinted and named on this portion of this special facility.

Effort, persistence and steady improvement are the driving forces behind the work of this organization which improves the physical, emotional and behavioral aspects of the lives of people who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Participants range in age from 5 to 60+ and thrive in the “sensory friendly” environment of soft lights, muted colors and sound absorbing floors and partitions.

Adam and Dedra Leapley had the vision for the center while searching for activities and programs for their son who is on the autism spectrum. They had discovered that recreational teams and mainstream activity based organizations didn’t understand the nuances of those with this condition and that there was a critical need to create something that addressed their specific needs. When Adam approached doctors and therapists in the field, their response was a resounding ”you have to do this.”

Adam and Dedra realized that their venture would not succeed without the right team to make it happen. “Our trainers are so important and are what makes this happen every day, and without them we couldn’t do this.” Adam says appreciatively. “We like to say that we hire super people, not super trainers.”

The trainers forge a relationship with each member and enjoy getting to meet the members and families and watching them grow into athletes. The center fights the misconception that those with autism can’t do things and Adam’s message reinforces one of their core beliefs. “With help and hard work they can achieve everything that most typical people can achieve.”

Watch how they do it and listen to the raves from attendees and their families about how this fitness center is helping their members live healthier, fun, and more enjoyable lives.
