(KUTV) Exercise physiologist Sheila Smith from McKay-Dee Hospital answers some important questions regarding fitness, diet and weight loss.

Q: Regarding weight loss, which method, diet or exercise, will result in the biggest weight loss?

A: Diet. Cutting calories by making changes in our food intake promotes weight loss more effectively than exercise. It’s easier to eat 1000 calories than burn 1000 calories. However, exercise is important in maintaining weight loss.

Q: Is diet or exercise more important in preventing heart disease?

A: Both. They are both important in preventing heart disease. Exercise keeps blood sugar levels stable as muscles use glucose. Exercise also helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Diet affects these also by the types food we choose to eat.

Q: Which helps most with depression diet or exercise?

A: Exercise. During exercise the body releases endorphins which trigger positive feelings that are shown to reduce depression. Exercising for 20 minutes can improve mood for up to 12 hours according to a study done by the University of Vermont. Changes in the brain can also occur which strengthen a person’s resolve against stress
