One of the most common questions I get asked as a fitness coach is „felix, whats more important for weight loss my diet or my workout“.
Before I can even start to answer the next thing people say is: I heard it’s 80 percent diet and 20 percent exercise. Is that true?
So in this video I want to debunk a few myths that are very common when it comes to the topic of diet vs workout for weight loss. Stay tuned to learn more.
First of all let’s start with this notion that weight loss and fitness in general is 80 percent diet and 20 percent exercise. It’s somewhat right but still wrong enough that I would call it a myth. here’s what I mean.
the 80/20 idea is based on the fact that exercise burns a lot less calories than people think. for example one hour of jogging burns around 400 – 600 calories depending on your speed, size and cardiovascular fitness.
That not that much if you think about it. 100 gram bar of chocolate has 500 calories so it’s not that difficult to eat all the energy you just burned during your jog right back.
So what people mean when they say dieting is more important than working out is that on average you have more control over your calories if you eat right than if you only exercise.
But why then is this 80/20 things still myth?
Because fitness is not just about weight loss. it’s about being healthy, having more energy, feeling better and also looking better.
If you want to achieve all that you need exercise, there is just no way around it. The most effective way to improve your cardiovascular health – so your heart and lungs – is through endurance training. The best way to more energy and a great looking body is with more muscle mass which means you need to do resistance training.
Even the best diet in the world will not get you a healthier heart and stronger muscles unless you also train them directly.
My point is that yes, it’s possible to lose weight without training but there is a big difference in weight loss via diet, and weight loss via diet and exercise. The latter is much healthier and leads to a body that is stronger, more resistant to disease and better looking.
Without exercise, you will have to follow a very low-calorie diet, because your body just doesn’t need a lot of energy. I also noticed that a completely sedentary lifestyle leads to a vicious cycle where people get lazier and lazier over time and it becomes more difficult for them to get back into exercise.
Now don’t get me wrong I don’t want to shame you into exercise if you currently aren’t doing any. Just having a healthy diet alone is already better than following the standard western diet. That said I strongly recommend you find some time to regularly exercise. it doesn’t have to be much. 30 minutes three times a week is already a good start. And don’t let anyone tell you have to do a specific exercise or movement you don’t like. Pretty much anything goes as long as you are having fun and seeing progress.
So to wrap up this video, weight loss and fitness come down to a healthy lifestyle and that always includes some form of exercise.
